Ugly File Cabinet No More!

This has been quite the busy week. I just finished one project, while having several others in the works. The next 3 are already figured out. I am actually in the process of redecorating so the next several will be majority home projects. Since I don't have any building to do, I have been tackling some of the smaller projects that got neglected. This week I got around to finally sprucing up my file cabinet. I bought one years ago, and it has held up quite nicely. Only thing is it is ugly! Well, ugly is a strong word...maybe a tad "blah". Yes, let's go with that.

Now I know most people are thinking, "It's a filing cabinet....who cares what it looks like?" Well, I do. I like things around me to be visually pleasing, and that includes my file cabinet. (Don't judge me). If I'm not mistaken, this was an upgrade from the original color. When I bought it, it was that rusty beige color that most file cabinets come in. I ended up spray painting it white, so it would blend in with the wall. Well, this time I wanted to give it a little more pizazz.

...and look at what we have! From blah to beautiful in just one short week. It was actually a pretty easy diy project. A few easy steps, and one craft wound was all it took.
  • 1st- I removed the drawers and spray painted it with a couple of coats of black paint. I used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor paint in Satin
  • 2nd- I bought some 12"x12" scrapbook paper (this design came from Hobby Lobby), and glued it to the front using Mod Podge. I was going for a black and white design.
I let everything dry for a couple of days to really let it set. The result....I love it! It's so pretty, and very visually pleasing. You would never know I was going to do something else. The original plan was to cover the entire front, drill holes, and add handles. After looking at it though, I decided I was fine with the way it was. That, and the fact that I did not feel like trying to drill holes through metal. Sounded like a pain. You will learn that I have a tendency to over think projects and do too much. Glad I stopped myself...this time. I'm also pretty impressed with the design lining up between the 2 drawers. Sooooo not intentional, but a treat non the less. Now if I just organize the inside to look as pretty as the outside we'd be in business, but that will have to come at a later date. Well, now that that is done - it's on to the next project! (Which shouldn't be long because I scored an awesome fabric find today. Stay Tuned)
