DIY - Watch Display

Well HELLO everyone! I know, I know I haven't posted in forever in a day. I have a very VERY good reason though. I have been working on a big project that has been months in the making. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook then you've seen a preview. It involves one of my most masterful creations, so stay tuned because it's MAGICAL! In the mean time, I decided to tackle a few smaller projects. I recently realized I have accumulated quite the watch collection. However, because they are in the drawer and I can't see them I end up wearing the same one everyday. So I decided it was time to create a display. Now, I originally wanted to just buy one, but I have really small wrists. They are literally children's size. Therefore a DIY had to happen.

For the supplies I bought a base piece made out of wood, a cardboard inner tube, a decorative wood piece, felt, and a piece of fabric.

I started with the base. I cut the decorative wood piece in half and drilled a hole in the middle of both pieces.

Then I drilled a screw through the bottom into both pieces and added a bit of glue where they joined together. Then I painted the whole piece white.

While the base was drying I put together the T bar. I started with a round tube from my project supply closet, and wrapped a piece of felt around it to give it some padding. For the fabric I went with a gray and white stripe.

I added a line of tacky glue to the edge of the fabric. You know I used to never use this stuff, and just recently tried it out by recommendation for another project. Now I use it all the time. It's like the adult version of Elmer's School Glue. I started wrapping the fabric around the tube.

Before I got around the end I grabbed a long nail to anchor the T-bar into the base. I could have just used glue, but wanted extra security so there's no chance of it tipping. I drove the nail through the tube and fabric. Then I wrapped the remainder of the fabric around the tube covering the top of the nail and glued down the end. I left the piece to dry for a few hours.

Now to put the 2 pieces together. I drilled a small pilot hole into the top of the base so the nail would go down easier. I put it in and hammered it down.

Unfortunately, I was a little rough and the nail broke through the top of the fabric.

Not in the plans, but not a catastrophe. I looked around for something that could cover without looking crazy. I grabbed a small wood piece, painted it white, and glued it down over the top of the nail. Funny thing is I did all of this while chatting on the phone with my one of my friends. She didn't seem at all surprised to hear some form of power tool in the background. As she said "Because drilling is a perfectly normal thing for you to be doing on a Thursday". People know me so well.

Last thing was to add end caps. I happened to have these poker chip type things I found in a supply closet at work. I found them one day when I was in there looking for a pen. Oh and before you ask...I did check before I took them. Stealing is wrong people!

I used 2 chips, strips of mat board, and Washi Tape.

I hot glued the mat board around the perimeter of the chip to give it structure. Then I used the tape to wrap around the whole thing to create more of one continuous piece.

Only thing left to do now was add some bling. I was going to just paint them white, but somehow that sounded boring so I decided to add glitter. I chose gold because it went better with the other decorative elements on top of the jewelry armoire. I layered the caps with glue and sprinkled them with glitter. I gave them a few layers until the caps were completely covered. To finish them up I sealed the glitter with Mod Podge.

I added a few dabs of hot glue in the inside, and pressed them on each side of the tube. VOLIA! A brand new watch holder.

It's FANCY! I love it, and it only took me a couple of days. So basically a weekend project that happened in the middle of the week. I definitely like the pop of gold sparkle at the end. I feel like it gives it a little added je ne sais quoi! Now to add the watches.

I am a little sad that you can't see the fabric design now. I kind of wasn't expecting that. It's okay though, I still know how awesome it really looks underneath.

What do you think? I am digging it, and it's just the right size. It fits every watch perfectly. I don't know what 's going to happen when I buy another one though. Maybe I'll extend it and make one of those double bar ones. Hmmm....

Until then it's...on to the next project.
